Last year my current employer, Dipan, approached me about helping him out with something that needed the inclusion of a graphic designer. Seeing as I was coming towards the end of my bachelor’s degree, I was eager to help out and get some real world experience.
Dipan’s company is the official exporter of Steinlager to the Chinese market. He was approached by a connection he has and was told that representatives in China have heard about Steinlager and they want it exported to them from New Zealand because they think it would do really well over there.
After logistics and a lot of work, he came to me to handle visuals that would be used over in China to advertise for Steinlager. The process for me was simply making poster after poster. The brand ambassador for Steinlager kept saying they liked what I was making and just wanted me to continue with creative freedom. The following images are some of what I came up with.
A big part of this brief was to showcase a real kiwi feeling in these posters, giving the people in China an idea of where this beer comes from.
Working on this project has given me a good insight into the requirements of the industry. Working with a real life brief (although, admittedly, a lot of creative freedom was granted) made me realise just how much I enjoy designing visuals for public advertisements. It was a good opportunity for me to receive feedback on my designs and also to go back and change things as needed. Finally, I know this is an important step in my journey as a designer and I think in years to come i’ll look back fondly on this project.
